“Rabb Di Awaaz,” India’s groundbreaking multi-inclusive and fully accessible Hindi feature film, has been recognized with the prestigious Special Jury Award at the 20th We Care Film Festival. For two decades, the We Care Film Festival, a collaboration between Brotherhood and the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) for India and Bhutan, has championed the voices and experiences of persons with disabilities through cinema. This year’s milestone 20th edition saw over 200 film submissions from across the globe, with only ten ultimately receiving awards. “Rabb Di Awaaz” proudly stood among these, representing India and receiving the esteemed Special Jury Award.

National Award-Winning Film Director Ojaswwee Sharma was present to accept the award, accompanied by the film’s talented lead actors Shiv Kumar Sharma (Actor & Activist) and Abhinav Sharma (Actor-Writer), Bhasker Pandey (Film Editor), Varun Narang (Actor), Dr. Rimpi Arora, Ravi Khurana, Shridhar Gupta, and other integral members of the cast and crew. The presence of the film’s creative team, including artists with disabilities, underscored the emotional resonance and significance of the recognition.

During the ceremony program of the We Care Film Festival at the United Nations in India, Ojaswwee Sharma, Director of the film Rabb Di Awaaz, had the opportunity to speak with Joyce Poan, Programme Specialist and Chief of Education at UNESCO, about “Rabb Di Awaaz.”

Ojaswwee Sharma shared, “We wanted to make a simple, entertaining, and meaningful film that had real representation and could be watched or experienced by everyone right from the day of its release. We wanted to make a film for everyone.” He emphasised how crucial an authentic portrayal was to them. “Shiv, a visually impaired person, plays himself in the film,” he shared.

“Our commitment to accessibility was there from day one. Shiv even received the script in Braille,” he continued. “We made sure our film was accessible for all audiences, including the visually and the hearing impaired. We made the film accessible in all possible aspects and made sure everything was ready all together on the very first day when the film was to release for the global audience. It wasn’t just about making a film; it was about creating a space where disability was respected, understood, and included. And, just as importantly, we highlighted the significance of mental health for everyone.”

He concluded, “We are happy that the film has been loved, recommended, and embraced by everyone who has seen Rabb Di Awaaz. We were happy we could do it through our film, and if that opens doors for more people to embrace inclusivity in every form of cinema, it makes us happy.”

After the conclusion of the awards ceremony, the United Nations, in partnership with Brotherhood and UNESCO India, hosted a special screening of “Rabb Di Awaaz” at the UN Headquarters. The film was met with a packed and appreciative audience, who responded with enthusiastic applause and commendation for its compelling narrative, authentic portrayal, and powerful message. The multi-inclusive version of the film, featuring Audio Description, Indian Sign Language, and closed captions, was screened on this significant occasion.
