India’s groundbreaking feature documentary on transgender education and human rights—were unveiled in Chandigarh at the Press Club. The day of the launch was one of shock, surprise, curiosity, and revelation for the people and the press. The event drew an overwhelming crowd, not limited to just the press, with people turning up in droves out of sheer curiosity.
The nation witnessed an unprecedented biographical portrayal of Dhananjay Chauhan, a transgender from India whose relentless efforts and unwavering dedication to education have inspired countless others of her gender and community. Her remarkable journey also includes the establishment of the first transgender washroom in a public university, the Panjab University, advocating for hostels, jobs, human rights laws and policies, and much more.
While “Admitted” is a story of Dhananjay’s courage, it also reflects the bold vision and determination of filmmaker Ojaswwee Sharma. At a time when such topics were rarely discussed, Ojaswwee took a brave step to bring this powerful narrative as a feature documentary to the public, overcoming numerous challenges to ensure the film’s message reached a global audience. “Admitted” has etched its place in the annals of modern Indian cinema, having been viewed by millions worldwide and earning 18 international awards, including the Special Jury Award at the 68th National Film Awards by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India on 30th September 2022.
22nd of August will always be a day to remember for a film that wrote history.
